Target audience results - Miss Miller

Target Audience Results

Introduction
Research was carried out to help see what audience enjoy the soul genre and our artist Adele. The target audience results were to help me conclude what our target audience is and for what reasons does this type of audience enjoy the soul genre. For my target audience results i asked 40 people to answer a questionnaire, which included 10 different questions about music video's in general but with the main focus of soul. The reason for asking the number of 40 people is so my results are more reliable and with a wider range so i can cover all aspects of answers. This will lead to my answers being accurate and successful, and help me to create my music video with a clear picture in mind of who my target audience is, and how they will be entertained. I had 3 closed and 7 open questions within my questionnaire.

My first pie chart shows the results of the first question of what is your gender. There was only two possible answers that could be said, with either being female or male. From my results i can see that the majority of people that i asked were female, but only by a small amount. This shows that it is conventional, as it is seen to be that the majority of people that listen to soul are women as they can relate to the song easier than men, as adele is singing about men bringing her heartbreak in life. The soul genre is very emotional and may not be enjoyed by men as much as women, which is conclusive within my results collected. The smaller amount of men that answered may just enjoy the singer herself or watching the music videos.

The age groups collected from my 10 questions showed a bracket of four different; 16-18, 19-21, 22-26, 27-30 and 30+. The age group which shows the largest amount of answers was between the ages of 19-21. This is relatable as Adele wrote her first song at the age of 19, and is now enjoyed by this age, as the experiences she sings about have also probably been experienced by that age group too and they can relate to adele's situations and lyrics. This also shows some maturity as you have to be mature to understand the type of music within the soul genre and the lyrics being sung, which includes Adele. The smallest age group shown within my results on the pie chart is between the ages of 27-30. This age group may not particularly enjoy Adele's music as Adele is quite young and not creative music that the ages of 27-30 enjoy to listen to, and may not be able to relate as easily as the younger ages.

The next pie chart ask's the audience what your preferred style of music video is, with a choice of three options. The three options are the narrative, concept and performance. The answer which was chosen the most by my audience of 40 people was the narrative. I feel that this was chosen the most as the narrative is the most noticed style within a music video. The narrative is the basis of a music video and this portrays the artists emotions and feelings. The narrative within Adele's music video's are usually based around family and love. A wider range of audience may not know what is involved within the concept of a music video, which is why i feel this it the least within the pie chart. The performance style of music videos within the soul genre includes an artist performing on stage or towards an audience, which is easily recognised. This question overall gave me information that the narrative is noticed most by most of the audience so this what myself and my group will focus on the most when creating our music video and will include a strong narrative.
The next question me and my group chose to ask 40 people was what is your favourite editing style and why. This is an open question as the question ends in why meaning my audience have to gee a reason for their choice. The five most popular answers to my question was, slow paced editing, filters, faced paced editing, jump cut and other. The most chosen answer was slow paced editing. Slow paced editing allows the audience to absorb the emotion being sent out and allow them to understand the meaning behind the song. Slow paced editing normally shows a specific movement within the music video which relates to the lyrics and portrays the artists emotions. This also is conventional to the soul genre as slow paced editing is used a lot for this reasoning. The smallest amount of chosen answers was jump cut and other. Jump cuts aren't easily recognised by the audience as they aren't used frequently within the soul genre as they are happen quite fast, whereas soul videos are slow. Overall, this question has given me in insight into what editing styles i will include within my music video and how they affect the audience.

The next question i asked my audience was describe the setting that you would normally see in a soul music video. The answers shown are what was said, but without the elaboration. The four main answers are the city, isolated setting, bar or a pub and stage.  The most popular answer was the stage. This is where most soul performances take place and are seen by the audience. Adele mainly performs on stage and is also a well-knonw soul artist with the UK. An isolated setting means the audience can see the artist clearly, and this adds to the effect of the emotions being sent out to the audience, as the isolated feel means the emotions and feelings connect as the the soul artist adele may feel this way too within her music video's swell as many other soul artists.
The most popular theme within my questionnaire was family. There were 5 main answers from asking 40 different people and these are all shown on the pie chart; love, heartbreak, drugs/alcohol, family and other. As love being the most popular answer this shows that the theme of love is enjoyed within the soul genre, and can be related by most of adele's soul genre. With a similar amount of results family was also popular within my questionnaire. Family is also sung about within the soul genre a lot, which involves the artists past and how arguments have evolved and sorted themselves out. This also connects to the theme of death, as artists also sing about family members that have passed away and how this effects them within life. A theme within the this genre in a music video is vital as it provides a basis of a narrative and allows the artist to sing about something specific and send a message through the lyrics.

This question asked my audience was what is it about Adele that you like. The most popular answers which were said was unique, versatile, her voice, relatability and other. The most popular answer i can see from my pie charts is relatability. This means the audience can relate to the artist with her lyrics, and the meaning and message she is sending out. This is key within a soul genre music video as it allows the audience to create a relationship with the audience and especially with Adele and her type of music. She
directs her messages at the audience and can be understood by her target audience. The second most popular answer is Adele's voice. Adele's voice within the UK is very popular and enjoyed by a large audience, this is a main feature of Adele which is noticed. A lot of things are liked about Adele, and there are not many thing that aren't, which is why this question is successful.

Adele has many popular songs, although some are enjoyed more than others. The most popular was Hometown glory, which is the song that me and my group have also chosen to use. This song is enjoyed by a wide audience as it is upbeat and the lyrics have meaning that can be understood by Adele's target audience. I feel that this question has helped me too finalise which song is the right one to use and is enjoyed the most out of all of her songs. The fact that Hometown Glory was chosen as the most popular means that  my video will reach Adele's target audience and will be enjoyed. The least most popular song chosen is Make you feel my love. This song was produced a long time ago which might be the reason why this wasn't said a lot. Although this has a different tune to hometown glory which is obviously enjoyed more and more recent.

The last question asked within my questionnaire is why do you think Adele is conventional to the soul genre, for this question there where three main answers.  The most commonly said answer was sings about conventional topics. The soul genre includes conventions of love and family which is frequently sung about in all of Adele's songs, including Hometown Glory. Moreover, closeups are also frequently used in her videos, showing her emotions and feelings that she is sending out to her audience. This being chosen as the second most popular shows that the close-ups used are effective and means the audience can understand and create a relationship with the artist.
The next question that i asked my target audience was what camera angles do you find most effect in the soul genre and why. From this question there were five main answers which i have shown within my pie chart. The most popular answer from my audience was close ups. Close ups are frequently used within the soul genre and Adele's videos as it is an easy way to show emotions and feelings and create a relationship between the audience and the artist. The record label often do this so the audience can understand the message that is being sent out to the audience. Moreover, the second most popular answer was a mid shot. Mis shots are used in mainly all genres within music, and are easy to recognise by a large audience.  Over the shoulder shots are not frequently used within the soul genre and are not conventional. I feel that this may have been chosen by the audience as they are used within other genres to show the setting from the artists point of view or vis-versa. I feel that this question has helped me to elaborate on what camera angles to use within my music video and what and why they work well when producing them to my target audience.

The theorist I which relates to my music video and questionnaire is Grant McCraken as Hebdige or
CCCS doesn't take into account the fact that teens will often move between subcultures, and older youths mix and match styles/values from a mix of subcultures. Adele has a very wide audience, and her audience have grown older with her from creating her music. When Adele release her first song her audience was her age and as she has grown older her audience have seen her produce different music and new singles which have become popular. From Hebdige I am going to create my artist to be seen as an individual as well as following conventions to grab the audiences attention and not being so mainstream. My questionnaire has shown me too see that Adele is enjoyed by a wide audience and the soul genre have many more positives than negatives. The post modern world is full of diversity, dynamism and creativity, and creativity is used a lot within the soul genre to create a different aspect to the audience and show them something different which relates to the song/lyrics. This shows that not everyone thinks the same and that each person has their own individual personality and identity, this is also shown through my vox pops and questionnaire.
My Vox Pops have been beneficial as I have seen five different opinions on the soul genre as well as Adele. My vox pops have shown me a variety of different opinions and answers, all different and shown me what my audience enjoy about the soul genre and what they don't, helping me know what to include within my music video and what not to, to ensure I catch my target audience and a wider one. The purpose of Vox Pops have helped me to collate qualitative data, not quantative, using open questions means detailed and explained answers including meaning and own opinions.

Because of my results I am going to include various different things. From my questionnaire I found out various different things that the audience like and conventions that are used in the soul genre. One question which I asked my audience lead me to find that my target audiences favourite Adele song was Hometown Glory. Because of this I used this song within my own music video, as I wanted my target audience to be able to enjoy my music video and understand the connotations that I gave sent out from it. Also, my audience told me that they enjoyed the camera angle - long shot. Because of this I included frequent long shots in my music video to represent the artist, showing her facial expressions as well as body language. This means the audience can understand what she is feeling and a relationship can be created between the two. Moreover, the conventional topics answer from one of my final questions lead me to pick a top for my artist to sing about. My artist is singing about her family and past love who she has moved away from. Love, passion and family are conventional topics of the soul genre, meaning my target audience can easily recognise what she is singing about and the meaning behind her lyrics.

Conclusion
Within my research I have found useful asking 40 different people questions which will help me establish my target audience for my music video. My answers for all 10 questions lead to a conclusion that Adele and the soul genre have a very large audience and certain things are enjoyed more than others. The reason for choosing 40 people is that my results are now very accurate and précised, and I have a good amount of data to look at. Also my Vox Pops allowed five different opinions on the same questions, helping me to see what people from different age groups enjoy and for what reasons. If I was to complete this questionnaire and Vox Pops again I would probably ask more people within my questionnaire, so I could have more accurate results, I would probably up my number from 40 to 50, and ask people from more specific age targets. Also maybe being more précised with my questions and only allowing my audience to narrow down their answers to 2 or 3 rather than having 4 or 5 to analyse every time, giving me more précised results. Overall this has been conclusive and helpful.

Vox Pops

I feel that from my five Vox pop videos it has allowed me to understand my audiences different opinions on what they do and don't like about the soul genre. This has helped me to understand what things i should include within my music video, for example what editing style's and what uses of cinematography, and who this will help catch the right target audience and send out the right values and messages.

  1. You have provided a sound analysis of your results, explaining what the results show, and what this means in terms of your video, but not going into enough detail on what you will include within your video as a result

    You need to:
    1) Make sure you explain what you will include (specific examples) within your music video because of your results
    2) Unclear some of your open questions are actually open. You need to evidence this by explaining why certain people chose the answers given (Reasons for their choices)
    3) Elaborate on subculture theory paragraph, by explaining how (Examples) you will follow the particular theory you have chosen in your music video, and how it applies to your results
    4) SPAG
